www.BeaversPondPress.com
9781592982806, $32.00, www.amazon.com

Born and raised in Hatley, a small rural community located in central Wisconsin, Verne Pickering (with the assistance of Donald Pickering) has deftly written and superbly illustrated an informed and informative history of Hatley including the coming of the railroad in 1880, through its years as a lumber industry center, to the diary farms that replaced the forested areas. Of special note is the history of Hatley moonshine production during the Prohibition era. This fascinating local history covers the years of the Great Depression, World War II, and the eventual decline of farming, resulting in Hatley becoming something of a 'bedroom suburb' for Wausau. A superb history, "Hatley" is highly recommended for academic and community library Wisconsin History collections, and would admirably serve as a template for similar histories of other local Wisconsin communities.

Paul Kurtz (Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, State University of New York, Buffalo) is a tireless advocate of rationality and an icon in the field of debunking the fantastically thinking associated with superstition and religion. He is also the driving authority behind Prometheus Books, the premier publishing of works emerging from the perspective of 'skeptical inquiry', and within the past few years a rather un-scale series of science fiction titles under the Prometheus Books imprint 'Pyr'. In "Paul Kurtz: Exuberant Skepticism", a deftly compiled and skillfully edited 230-page compendium showcasing Kurtz' thoughts, commentaries, and insights in advocating the use of science as a means of inquiry into the claims of the paranormal 'phenomena', as well as religious conceits and proffered explanations of real-world impacting belief systems, the reader will learn how to apply a skeptical inquiry mind-set to social, cultural, and political issues. Of special note is Kurtz's optimism as the future of rational discourse with respect to an ever improving understanding of the human condition. Simply stated, "Paul Kurtz: Exuberant Skepticism" is enthusiastically recommended reading and should be considered a seminal contribution to academic and community library Philosophy reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Then the Mexican Revolution began, originally launched from Texas on November 20, 1910 and for the next decade the role of the Texas Rangers was to deal with the subsequent border problems associated with the revolutionary activity of diverse and often hostile Mexican factions attempting to raise funds and recruits on Texas soil for their on-going conflicts. Exploring Desert Stone

Utah State University Press
7800 Old Main Hill, Logan, Utah 84322
www.USUPress.org
9780874217070, $34.95, www.amazon.com

In the mid-19th century, the expansions of an American West whether by war-time acquisition or phenomena such as the California Goldrush were preceded by dedicated exploration by the U.S. government who sought to understand the geography, topography, and natural resources of what had been acquired. "Exploring Desert Stone: John N. Macomb's 1859 Expedition to the Canyonlands of the Colorado" by historian and author Steven K. Madsen focuses on the very first U.S. government expedition to explore the canyon country and the Four Corners area near what is now Moab, Utah, a region that even today is difficult to access. Following the Old Spanish Trail seeking routes into Utah (made even more urgent because of the recent 'Utah War' where federal troops occupied key parts of the newly emergent Mormon country under the control of Brigham Young whose policy of polygamy had gained the ire of the U.S. government), the exploratory groups of topographical engineers under the command of John Macomb created a documentary record of their efforts, as well as the first detailed map of the era. Their story and their achievements are now available under the deft and painstaking historical scholarship of Steven Madsen. Enhanced with an extensive Bibliography and a comprehensive Index, "Exploring Desert Stone" is a seminal and invaluable contribution, and should be a core addition to academic library 19th Century American History collections, as well as supplemental reading lists for non-specialist general readers with an interest in the history and development of the American West.
