Claudia and the Gladiator
Betty Williams
Vantage Press
419 Park Avenue South, Mew York, NY 10016
9780533162437, $11.95, www.vantagepress.com

"Claudia and the Gladiator" is for young adults and was published posthumously as a lasting legacy to the author's three grown children. Unfolding in exciting, descriptive prose, "Claudia and the Gladiator" takes the reader directly to the world of Ostia, near Rome, in 166 A.D. Eleven year old Claudia Marcella is only daughter to Marcellus, captain of a tidy fleet of merchant ships. Since Claudia's mother died when she was very young, she is nurtured by two caring household slaves and her tutor, Cassius. Unusual for a young woman of her age, time and status, Claudia's education includes rules and styles of classic oratory, and she plans to enter an oratory competition that is normally open only to boys or young men. Much of the decisive action of the story depends upon her oratorical skills, which she uses to defend her unlikely friend and companion, Alexander, a Greek gladiator who is also a slave. "Claudia and the Gladiator" is a wonderful example of juvenile historical fiction. Every detail of daily life in Ostia is well researched. The author spent time living near the site of "Claudia and the Gladiator," and her experience within the landscape shows in the narrative. "Claudia and the Gladiator" will appeal to readers age 11 and up, with a fifth grade reading ability level. A fine, delicate balance between historical authenticity and modern relevance for presentation of issues (such as the status of women, slaves, and accessibility of justice) help to promote the appeal of "Claudia and the Gladiator."

The Big God Story is a Christian children's picturebook that summarizes the story of the Bible from God's creation of the world and the Garden of Eden through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Gentle illustrations complement the straightforward text that reminds young readers of God's love as well as condensing Biblical events into an easily followed narrative. "You see, in order to be our Redeemer, Jesus had to die. That was the only way we could be friends with God again. But that's not the end of this Big Story. Jesus didn't stay dead - three days later, an angel rolled back the heavy stone door to His tomb, and it was empty! Jesus was alive again, proving to all people that He was Christ, the Lord!" An excellent addition to Christian children's libraries, The Big God Story is brief enough - yet respectful enough of the Bible and its teachings - to serve as a bedtime storybook.

"That's Where God Is" is the beginning of a Christian-oriented answer to a young child's question, "Where can I find God?" Told as a story of a visit between a young boy and his grandfather, "That's Where God Is" points children towards the idea of looking for God every day, seven days a week. Each day brings different experiences to the boy, illuminated by related Scripture quotations that help draw the young mind towards awareness of God. The pastel tinted illustrations help to bring just the right quality of mindfulness to each days special experiences of God. The book does not end with the boy realizing that God is everywhere around him. After he tells his grandfather all the days and ways he found God, he asks, "Where else could God be?" When he finds God can be in his heart he decides he wants to invite God to be in his heart and with him wherever he goes. He asks his grandfather to teach him how to pray. Learning to pray is a joyous experience, simply expressed. "That's Where God Is" presents a natural learning experience for very young children as they are beginning to discover and explore their spirituality and belief in God. It is the first book in a two part series which promises more adventures in spiritual explorations to come.

'We have to trust the One Who gave people the Bible.'" The lift-the-flap segments add an eye-catching interactive aspect to this empathetic Christian picturebook, which features colorful, cartoon-like illustrations and a gentle narrative tone. "The Keya Quests: Three Souls Destiny -Bound" is the first volume of a fantasy fiction epic filled with action and suspense, complete with a cliffhanger ending that begs the continuing narrative in future volumes. The author's real knowledge of weaponry, bows, and knives adds a great richness of detail to the well crafted battle action scenes. Keya, a lost elfin princess is seeking a legendary hero to assist her people in a desperate battle. To find help, she travels between worlds and times, arriving at an American island in modern times among strange but helpful people who become her friends. Upon arrival she is followed and attacked by maddened wolves who have also traveled through the pillars. She is rescued from certain death by Orren, a mysterious man with great battle skill and prowess. The plot and quest unfold with threatening moves made by stalking evil militia from Keya's world. Woven into the narrative are believable events such as a festival center for medieval-like tourneys on the island, with fight training and planned clashes. "The Keya Quests" reads well and swiftly, with exciting twists and turns to the plot. One distracting feature of the narrative style that struck this reviewer is it is written completely in present tense. Perhaps there was an artistic reason the author chose this technique. It is difficult to judge its effectiveness not knowing the author's intent. This reviewer's impression is that it was a distracting effect, but one that could be adapted to and integrated by the reader. High marks for adventure and action go to "The Keya Quests."

Mitzvah is a mischievous, good- hearted mutt who is adopted by a Jewish family after he helps them find their daughter Rachel in the pet store. Because Mitzvah doesn't understand some common Jewish holiday customs, he makes many hilarious faux pas with his new family, eating matzoh balls, learning about Shabbat customs, and pouncing on David and Rachel's spinning dreidels at Hanukkah. Mitzvah has lots to learn, but the Bergers (and Mitzvah loves his family's name) are patient and willing to teach him. Mitzvah also enjoys learning about Passover and he especially enjoys being allowed to eat all the special holiday food that Bubbie and Zaydie, his children's grandparents, give to him. "Bogus, an Aldo Zelnick Comic Novel" is the second graphic novel for kids age 7-13 featuring the irrepressible Aldo Zelnick, kid detective and linguist extraordinaire. "Bogus" is the B- letter book, incorporating as many vocabulary words beginning with "B" as possible. In "Bogus," Aldo learns lots about philanthropy, another famous comic book artist (Charles Schulz), and the importance of remembering we are all citizens of a global village. Even finding a valuable lost ring and receiving a, $1000 reward are not as important as banding together and working and caring about other people who need help. Aldo Zelnick is a great hero for kids because he is exactly that, another believable kid. Pretty wonderful when you stop to examine him after all. As before, effortless learning takes place with adeptly incorporated vocabulary, aka the "B" gallery, which includes lots of techno-speak ("B4N") and popular lingo or slang words ("buzzkill") as well as foreign words ("bon voyage" and "bok choy") and just plain fun words (like "bodacious"). The comic illustrations keep the pages turning as does the fast moving story. Kids will love to collect all the letters of the alphabet as discovered by Aldo Zelnick. Next in the series, "Cahoots," involving a technology free vacation in rural Minnesota coming in late 2010. This reviewer, who incidentally is from rural Minnesota, can't wait!

But when she reaches his animal house (which is actually a gorvilla) she encounters many amazing creatures in his home. Whoever heard of a floormingo? or a kangaroom? How about a skink or a chankeldeer? In fact Jeremy's home is a magnet zoo for all the most unusual creatures. Kids are challenged to find them all in the loopy, colorful illustrations. "Animal House" stretches the concept of "animal" and "house" to a whole new level. It is outrageous in its tone, and consequently will be greatly enjoyed by kids age 5 and up.

"The Boy and the Moon" is an incredible mixed media collage-illustrated story book for children ages 4-6 about a boy who danced and howled with the moon at midnight, then decided to save her (the moon) from being stuck in a dark tree. All the animals want to help but don't know how, or are afraid. Fortunately, children can climb trees. The boy climbs bravely and tries to free the crying moon, but all his efforts fail. Then he has a fabulous idea, "a bright, ripe, red thought ." he picked the apples from the tree and fed them to the moon. The moon got so fat and round from the apples that she rolled right off the tree, after she stopped crying. Once the moon is back in the night sky, all the dancing and howling started up again. The final page shows a tired little moon-rescuing boy, sound asleep with his dog, at the doorway to the night sky. "The Boy and the Moon" is a magical book, perfect for bedtime stories, that children will treasure. An interesting addition to the book is free downloadable information about Collage & Storytelling available at http://www.gale.cengage.com/pdf/TeachersGuides/BoyandMoon.pdf. The artist used "a beautiful piece of worm eaten bark" for the swirling night sky in "The Boy and the Moon," while "the cratered surface of the moon is modeled from beach sand."

"Maneki Neko, the Tale of the Beckoning Cat" is a children's picture book that recounts a Japanese folk legend about a scruffy white cat with spots who came to stay with a poor monk at an obscure monastery, Kotoku Monastery. The monk named the cat Tama, and even though their food was meager, their life together was happy. Tama liked to groom herself and when she did so, she appeared to beckon with her paw. One day a riding samurai saw Tama on the doorstep during a terrible storm, and he left the shelter of a lone pine tree to examine the cat more closely. Moments later the tree was struck by lightening and burned, leaving the samurai safe with Tama. The monk came looking for Tama and offered tea and shelter to the samurai from the terrible storm. Because the samurai was from a powerful ancient family, he vowed to help the monk, cat, and shabby monastery for saving his life. The riches he showered on the temple were shared with the village people who had supported the monastery in the past. Thus Kotoku Monastery was transformed into Gotokuji Temple, a much more influential temple. Tama lived a long, happy life with her favorite monk. Because her beckoning paw brought luck, her ceramic image is still created today, called Maneki Neko, the beckoning cat. "Maneki Neko" is a beautifully illustrated retelling of a legend of fabulous luck and wealth, written especially to appeal to children age 6 and up.
